Here is a really simple program to practice your hiragana :
HiraTest 1.3 from 30/11/2002.

    New in version 1.3 :
  • Nothing :) Fixed the code for KataTest (below)

    New in version 1.2 :
  • Option to show the correct answer if you're wrong
  • Keeps scores

    New in version 1.1 :
  • Fixed Romaji for "SA", which read "A" -- thanks Jer_Beornhelm
  • Fixed Romaji for "FU", which read "HU" -- thanks Komodo Nibblies
  • Added a Romaji-to-Hiragana practice mode

The program shows you a single Hiragana character, plus five Romaji syllables. Naturally you're supposed to pick the right one :) If you do so, a green rectangle appears; otherwise, a red cross is drawn. One second after answering, a new character will appear...

You can also practice the other way around -- a Romaji syllable is shown together with 5 images of Hiragana symbols. Click on the button below the correct symbol to see if you're right.

The download is only a few Kb, and everything is bitmap based, so this program works, even if you don't have a Japanese font on your machine.

Please note that I made this program to have a means to practice myself -- so it is possible that there are errors, a wrong answer being taken for correct, or vice versa. If you find one, please mail me at bert [at] bpeers [dot] com, but check with the latest version first.

The characters were copy pasted from text typed in wordpad on a vanilla Japanese Windows 2000 -- so stylistic fantasies are hopefully minimal.
