The Shortest Day

Last week we had the shortest day of the year, like everywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere. With a sunrise at 11:22 and a sunset at 15:30, that's just over four hours of daylight on the 22nd of December, 2009. I thought it might be interesting to take my camera to work and take pictures throughout the day to show you what that looks like in reality...

Višey - I

Višey is a small island off the coast of Reykjavik; a five minute ferry trip and you're there. It still succeeds in getting you away from the "city", even though it's basically just a couple of smallish hills and vegetation made of dry sticks. It's a nice walk to follow the encircling trail, and enjoy the amazing view.

Grotta / Seltjarnarnes

Reykjavik is occupying a little peninsula, it's not much more than a tiny bump off the "mainland" and so it's a pretty small town. It turns out it's not small enough yet, though, because the very tip of the peninsula is technically speaking another township called Seltjarnarnes. The tip of that, in turn, is Grotta, a breeding area for birds that's closed to the public in May and June.

Reykjavik is really tiny, so if you walk away from its main axis for like 2 minutes, you end up on a nice path that traces around the peninsula.

Vancouver Sunset

Last one, to wrap it up! That stone thing is some indian symbol that's also used as a logo for the upcoming Winter Olympics, so you'll be seeing a lot of that (if you care for that stuff).

There's a little island off the coast of Vancouver, I thought it would be like the Alcatraz thing in front of San Francisco, but it's a little bigger -- you can pretty much fit Belgium on it :)

Barbecue aan zee

't Was de bedoeling om de vis zelf te gaan vangen in de oceaan, maar omdat we met de fall-out zaten van een tyfoon die iets verder een baseball stadium aan 't afbreken was, ging dat niet door :( De barbecue echter wel :) Met speciale dank aan Pioneer, Peter, en Jo.
