Reykjavik is occupying a little peninsula, it's not much more than a tiny bump off the "mainland" and so it's a pretty small town. It turns out it's not small enough yet, though, because the very tip of the peninsula is technically speaking another township called
Seltjarnarnes. The tip of that, in turn, is Grotta, a breeding area for birds that's closed to the public in May and June.

During World War II, Germany expected the Allied invasion somewhere around Calais, because that is the closest point between the UK and France. In preparation for that, they built fortifications along the entire coast, but with extra emphasis on that area. Between Cap-gris-nez and Cap-blanc-nez you can find Wissant, giving a rather discouraging welcome indeed when approached from the bad side.
