Icesave

Next Saturday, March 6th 2010, Iceland will hold the referendum that decides if the Icesave-law stands, or becomes void. Some colleagues have been very helpful in explaining and summarizing what's going on, and now the government has released this exceptionally clear and concise summary that seems to be in line with what I've been hearing. A second document has the exact numbers and figures. If you're curious what this is really all about, I suggest reading these -- they're both only two pages!

I thought this would be way more... US Postal Service has a deficit of 8 billion dollars a year.

Well, there's two things to keep in mind.

First, you have to divide this by a population count of say around 150.000 people. Less if you only count those actively working. That's a large debt to pay off by each and every one of us here through taxes, for something people feel they had nothing to do with, and definitely didn't/don't get any benefit from.
US Postal Service employs 4x the population of Iceland.

Also, this is only one case; there's some worry that being too easy with handing out money will trigger more claims from other banks that lost...
