The
beach near Vik has some really great views!
The scenery standing at the beach, looking West.
That mountain on the right looks like it was abruptly broken away from something else, much like the rift at the Althingi. Its base is formed by a series of stone columns that couldn't have looked more neat and mathematical if they'd been man made!
An even closer look at the remarkable patterns and structures on this thing.
This location is kind of interesting because it also shows the "edge" of Iceland. There's these mountains rising up out of nowhere, and then on top of their slopes the "land" lays; quite literally, as you can see in this shot. The patch of earth is perilously thin, and the layer of vegetation presumably holding it in place even more so. I'm glad I'm not an environmentalist that needs to worry about this sort of thing.
In the first pic you may have noticed a little cave in the mountainside; you may also have noted in the distance there were some other rocky structures just sitting there in the sea. Standing in the cave and turning East reveals more of these.
You may also have noticed that the beach looks pretty dark. This is not a photographic trick or problem; the beach really is black, because it's made of volcanic stone.
Everything is made of volcanic stuff here, there's probably some in the toothpaste too :p
Aside, this is the furthest I've been from Reykjavik so far -- about 180 km :)
