The first weekend of June I was up north near lake Myvatn, and there's a nice hike there that takes you from, basically, "the gas station at the top of the lake", through a field of lava rock, up a nasty hill, and down again into Dimmuborgir. The weather was great (relatively speaking), a great hike, about 7 to 8 kilometer one way... I should dig up the Garmin info :) Here are some of the sights along the first half of the hike.
